Strategies for Helping Those with Alzheimer's to Eat Well

Are you caring for someone with Alzheimer's disease? If you are, you will know that sometimes it can be challenging to help them get the right nutrition. Here are our top three strategies for helping someone with Alzheimer’s eat well.

Approaching mealtimes consistently and with these tips in mind can help your loved one improve their nutritional intake and their overall quality of life as they live with Alzheimer’s:

  1. Create a Routine and a Calm Environment: Consistency and simplicity are key. Have regular, predictable meal and snack times in a quiet, distraction-free environment. This helps to reduce confusion and makes mealtimes more manageable and enjoyable for someone with Alzheimer's. A calm setting minimizes distractions and helps your loved one focus on eating, making it easier for them to consume their food.
  2. Adapt Meals to Preferences and Eating Abilities: Note your loved one’s preferences and any difficulties they have with eating. Serve their favorite foods to stimulate appetite. Provide nutritious options that are easy to eat such as finger foods if utensils are becoming difficult to use. Use plates and utensils that contrast with the food to make it easier to see. Encouraging independence helps your loved one to be more engaged in their meal or snack.
  3. Encourage Hydration and Monitor Nutrition: People with Alzheimer's may not always recognize thirst or may forget to drink, leading to dehydration. Offer water, juice, or other preferred beverages regularly to prevent dehydration. Keep an eye on their weight and overall nutritional status to help identify issues early. Consult with your loved one’s doctor for personalized dietary advice or if you notice any concerning changes.  Supplements or fortified foods may be helpful if eating becomes too challenging.

These strategies can help address some of the common eating challenges faced by individuals with Alzheimer's disease, promoting better nutrition and enhancing their quality of life.  Educating yourself on the progression of Alzheimer's and its impact on eating and nutrition will help you provide the best possible care for your loved one.
