Music to soothe the soul

Music to soothe the soul

Music can have a profound impact on reducing stress and promoting relaxation. Studies also show that listening to or playing one’s favorite music can slow cognitive decline.

Music is tied to emotions and memories, making it a powerful tool. For dementia patients it can help them to recall memories or life events, and calm anxiety. Pairing music with daily activities can help improve cognition, including recognizing daily routines.

The Healing Power of Music

There are two ways to approach using the healing power of music. First, play music that the patient likes. A new study showed that people with Alzheimer’s disease can improve their cognition by listening to music that has personal meaning to them, especially songs that they know or have been listening to for many years. Other studies have shown that music may reduce agitation and improve behavioral issues that are common in the middle-stages of the disease. Even in the late stages of Alzheimer's, a person may be able to tap a beat or sing lyrics to a song from childhood. One thing is for certain: music is a connecting point to meaningful points in our lives, even after verbal communication has become difficult. To ensure the music you use is effective, start by simply asking “what’s your favorite song?” or, “what’s your favorite genre of music?”.

Next, use other genres of music known to help with stress relief. The type of music that works best for stress reduction can vary from person to person, but generally, the following genres are known to be effective:

  • Classical Music: Classical compositions, particularly those with slow tempos and gentle melodies, are often recommended for stress relief. Pieces by composers like Johann Pachelbel, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ludwig van Beethoven are commonly used.

  • Nature Sounds and Ambient Music: Music that incorporates nature sounds, such as flowing water, birdsong, or gentle rain, can create a soothing atmosphere. Ambient music with minimalistic and calming tones can also help create a sense of tranquility.

  • Instrumental Music: Instrumental music, whether it's classical, acoustic, or other genres like ambient, lacks lyrics that could distract your mind. This can help you focus on the music itself and ease your stress.

  • World Music and Ethnic Sounds: Traditional music from different cultures can provide a sense of cultural enrichment and novelty, which can help reduce stress and open your mind to new experiences.

  • Slow Tempo and Low Volume: Regardless of genre, music with slow tempos and played at a low volume tends to have a calming effect on the nervous system.

Explore What Works
Remember that individual responses to music can vary greatly, so it's important to experiment with different types of music to find what works best. Creating playlists or collections of calming music can be a helpful strategy.

It's also worth noting that combining music with other stress-reduction techniques, such as deep breathing can enhance the overall effectiveness of a stress management routine for a dementia patient.  When working with a dementia patient, here are some tips on how to select the right music:

  • Play music that is uninterrupted by commercials, such as songs on a CD. When music is disrupted, the patient may feel confused or agitated.
  • Set the music mood. For example, a tranquil piece of music can help create a calm environment, while a faster paced song from childhood may energize the person and evoke happy times.
  • While listening to the music, encourage physical movement like dancing or clapping.
  • Close doors, windows, or other electronic devices, as to avoid sensory overload.
  • Keep the music at a reasonable volume.
